Lena: You don't necessarily need to worry about missing the last metro. The night transportation system is very convenient in Budapest. The last metro is around quarter past 11 p.m., but the last departure for trams and buses is usually later. |
Eric: And what about after midnight? |
Lena: After midnight, you can get on night buses at every large metro or bus station. Their number starts with a 9. |

Lena: Of course. You can also call a taxi. The minimum fee is around 450 Ft and you pay around 300 Ft per km. Don't forget that calling a taxi by phone is usually less expensive than hailing one on the street. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
Lena: Felújítás miatt nem közlekedik. |
Eric: Which means “not in service due to renovation”. You may often hear it on public transport. |
Lena: Felújítás means “renovation”, miatt means “because of, due to”, and közlekedik means “to be in service, to run”. As a noun közlekedés means “transport”. |
Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Lena: Sure. For example, you can say.. A 4-es villamos felújítás miatt nem közlekedik. |
Eric: ..which means “Tram line 4 is not in service due to renovation.” Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Lena: Menetrend szerint |
Eric: This means “according to the schedule” |
Lena: Menetrend means “schedule” for public transport. Szerint means “according to”. You can often hear such expressions as menetrend szerinti vonat, which means “a regular train”, or menetrendszerűen közlekedik, which refers to “running on schedule”. |
Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Lena: Sure. A buszok hétköznapi menetrend szerint közlekednek. |
Eric: .. which means “The buses are running according to the workday schedule.” Okay, what's the last phrase? |
Lena: Meghosszabbított útvonal |
Eric: Which means “extended route” |
Lena: Útvonal is a noun combined from the nouns út which means “path or street”, and vonal which means “line”. You can also use Útvonal for a “route” in a GPS |
Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Lena: For example, you can say.. A vonatok meghosszabbított útvonalon közlekednek. |
Eric: .. which means “The trains' routes are extended.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn about some Hungarian suffixes that mean “from” and “to”. And the first suffixes for this lesson are… |
Lena: -tól, and -től, which mean “from” in English. |
Eric: You can use them in two different contexts. Most often they refer to a departure from one place, or moving away from a specific point. |
Lena: Right. In the dialogue, we saw the following phrase...az Arany János utcától a Nyugati pályaudvarig közlekedik. |
Eric: Which means “...the bus runs from Arany Janos street until Nyugati railway station” |
Lena: The specific point from which the bus is running is the station Arany János utca. |
Eric: Can we have more examples? |
Lena: Sure. A Nyugati pályaudvartól a Deák térig öt perc az út metróval. |
Eric: “It takes five minutes to go from Nyugati railway station to Deák square by metro.” |
Lena: Az Ecseri úttól nem jár a villamos. |
Eric: “The tram is not in service from Ecseri street.” The second meaning of the suffix is related to time, a specific moment from which something happens. For example.. |
Lena: A buszok reggel négy órától indulnak a végállomásról. |
Eric: “The first departure for buses is from 4 o’clock in the morning.” |
Lena: Öt órától hatig tárgyaláson vagyok. |
Eric: “I’m at a meeting from five to six.” |
Lena: Jövő héttől szabadságon vagyok. |
Eric: “I’m on a vacation from next week.” Ok! What’s our next suffix? |
Lena: It’s -ról, and -ről. It’s very similar to the previous one -tól, -től . In many cases, it’s used in relation to departures. You can use both: -ról, -ről and -tól, -től. However, -ról, -ről is not used in expressions related to time. |
Eric: Can you give us an example? |
Lena: Sure. Az első busz a Deák térről a hármas metró menetrendje szerint négy óra ötvenöt perckor indul. |
Eric: “The first bus departure from Deák square is at 4.55 in the morning according to the Metro Line 3 schedule.” |
Lena: Here we used the suffix -ról. It was Az első busz a Deák térről indul. But we can also use -tól in this example: Az első busz a Deák tértől indul. |
Eric: The meaning will be the same - “The first bus departure from Deák square” |
Lena: However, listeners, some verbs can only be used with the suffixes -ról, -ről and others only with -tól, -től |
Eric: You can find detailed information about such verbs in the lesson notes. |
Lena: Another way you can use -ról, -ről is like “about” or “of”. |
Eric: Some sample sentences please, Lena! |
Lena: Hallottál már erről? |
Eric: “Have you ever heard about this? |
Lena: Miről beszélsz? |
Eric: “What are you talking about?” |
Lena: Mit gondolsz a gazdasági válságról? |
Eric: “What do you think of the economic crisis?” Ok! And our last suffix for this lesson is.. |
Lena: -ra, and -re. It often combines with the suffix -ról, -ről and has opposite meaning. While -ról, -ről expresses “from”, -ra, -re means “to, on, onto, up to”. For example. Elnézést, Budapestre megy ez a busz? |
Eric: “Excuse me, does this bus go to Budapest?” |
Lena: Miskolcra járok egyetemre. |
Eric: “I’m going to University in Miskolc.” |
Lena: Felmásztunk a hegyre. |
Eric: “We climbed up the mountain”. |
Outro
|
Eric: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Lena: Viszontlátásra! |
