Hi, everybody! Do you know how Hungarian people celebrate New Year's Day? In this lesson, you'll learn some important phrases about the Hungarian New Year and some valuable cultural tips. |
In Hungarian, New Year's day is called... |
újév |
[slowly] újév |
On újév, Hungarian people greet each other by saying Buék! |
(slow) Buék! |
This means "Happy New Year." |
When you meet someone for the first time in the new year, be sure to greet them with this phrase. |
Hungarian people also celebrate the holiday with special events and customs. At most events, you will see… |
tűzijátékok |
(slow) tűzijátékok |
This means "fireworks." |
The highlight of the New Year's celebrations is the fireworks. In Hungary, the use of fireworks and firecrackers is only permitted on New Year's Eve. Before or after the fireworks, Hungarian people also exchange small gifts to give good luck each other. Four-leaf clovers as well as the "good-luck piglet" are well-known good luck charms. |
On this special day, Hungarian people eat rétes |
(slow) rétes |
This means "Strudel." |
On New Year's Day in Hungary, you are not allowed to eat poultry or fish. This is because of the local belief that chickens bury our good luck and fish will swim away with it. In contrast, pigs dig the luck out, so eating pork on New Year’s is thought to bring you good luck for the rest of the year. But in many houses, you will find Strudel, because the dish is associated with life as long as the stretched sheets of strudel dough. |
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the expression and repeat after me. |
