| In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb csinál which means "to do" in Hungarian. |
| In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb szeret. |
| Szeret can mean both "to like" and "to love" in Hungarian, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s go! Hajrá! |
| Imagine you are in a restaurant with your boyfriend or girlfriend and he or she asks you - Szereted a bort? |
| This means "Do you like wine?" in the informal form. |
| So supposing you like it, you can say Igen, szeretem a bort. |
| [slowly] Igen, szeretem a bort. |
| So let’s break down this answer. |
| First we had- |
| Igen which is simply "Yes." |
| I’m sure you remember the verb conjugation to use when there’s an object in the sentence. In the case of szeret in the first person, it’s szeretem. |
| With the noun bor, meaning “wine”, you have to use the suffix -t, indicating the object and also the definitive article, so it’s a bort. |
| Igen, szeretem a bort. |
| Note that in Hungarian we use the verb szeret to express both that we "love" or that we "just like" something or someone. |
| However, if you just appreciate something, you should use the verb tetszik, which is closer in meaning to “like”. Szeret should be used when talking about something you really love in general (food, movies, and so on) or about the person you are in love with. |
| To say that you really love or enjoy something or someone, you can add the word nagyon before both the verbs szeret meaning “to love” and tetszik meaning “to like”. |
| Notice the difference: Nagyon szeretem a filmeket means "I really like movies", in general. |
| If you say Nagyon tetszik ez a film, it means “I really like this movie” that we are watching now. |
| And of course, szeret is above all the verb of love, so if you are talking to the person you fell in love with, you can tell him or her Szeretlek, which is "I love you" in Hungarian! Isn’t that romantic? |
| Now it’s time for Livia’s Tips. |
| In Hungarian, if you really want to insist on the fact that you love something but in an informal way, you use the verb imád which is "to like" or "to enjoy" something/someone very much |
| Thus, for example you may hear Imádom a nyarat! This means "I really love summer!" |
