INTRODUCTION |
Simone: Hi everyone and welcome to Upper Beginner Hungarian, season 1, lesson 9, All you Need to Attract a Hungarian Woman is a Good Stamp Collection. I am Simone. |
Csaba: And I am Csaba. |
Simone: In this lesson we’re going to learn about postpositions and to say things like “in front of the TV.” |
Csaba: The conversation takes place at Susan’s place. |
Simone: It's between Susan and Dani. |
Csaba: They use the informal language. |
Simone: Let’s listen to it now. |
DIALOGUE |
Susan: Az asztal a tévé előtt lesz. |
Dani: Nem lesz jó, túl közel van. Szerintem tegyük az asztalt az ablak elé. |
Susan: Az ablak alá a kanapé jön. |
Dani: Hol lesz a tükör? |
Susan: A konyhaajtó mellett. |
Dani: Az ajtó mellé a pipagyűjteményem jön... |
Susan: Remek... |
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly. |
Susan: Az asztal a tévé előtt lesz. |
Dani: Nem lesz jó, túl közel van. Szerintem tegyük az asztalt az ablak elé. |
Susan: Az ablak alá a kanapé jön. |
Dani: Hol lesz a tükör? |
Susan: A konyhaajtó mellett. |
Dani: Az ajtó mellé a pipagyűjteményem jön... |
Susan: Remek... |
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation. |
Susan: Az asztal a tévé előtt lesz. |
Simone: The table will be in front of the TV. |
Dani: Nem lesz jó, túl közel van. Szerintem tegyük az asztalt az ablak elé. |
Simone: That's not gonna work, it is too close. I think we should put the table in front of the window. |
Susan: Az ablak alá a kanapé jön. |
Simone: The sofa comes over here under the windows. |
Dani: Hol lesz a tükör? |
Simone: Where is the mirror going to be? |
Susan: A konyhaajtó mellett. |
Simone: Next to the kitchen door. |
Dani: Az ajtó mellé a pipagyűjteményem jön... |
Simone: My pipe collection will come over here next to the door. |
Susan; Remek... |
Simone: Great... |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Simone: When I used to live in Hungary, I remember the apartment buildings all having a small inner courtyard. |
Csaba: That is very common in downtown apartments all around the country. Most of the old buildings are square shaped with decent size courtyard in the middle. You share that with all the ground floor tenants. |
Simone: They look so nice and old. But it’s also a good place to take a look at the laundry of all your neighbors. |
Csaba; Haha, you’re not supposed to do that. If you can ignore drying laundry, I think you can actually book tours to visit these old, turn of the twentieth century buildings. Really nice railings and old elevators and brass and iron. I lived in one of those. |
Simone: These are expensive, I take. |
Csaba: Downtown apartments all are. The other problem is that since these are old buildings, the plumbing system is not the best. But it shouldn’t discourage you from renting one if you can. |
Simone: All right, let’s go to vocabulary now. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Simone: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Csaba: The first word is gyűjtemény. |
Simone: “Collection.” |
Csaba: Gyűjtemény. We’ll teach you a very old pickup-line now, but urge you not to use it seriously. Megnézed a bélyeggyűjteményem? |
Simone: “Do you want to check out my stamp collection?” |
Csaba; Megnézed a bélyeggyűjteményem? Like I said, only with a comedic purpose. |
Simone: But anyway, any kind of noun tagged to gyűjtemény means “that collection.” |
Csaba: CD-gyűjtemény. 2X |
Simone: “CD collection.” |
Csaba; We’ll use this as a verb now. Én kártyákat gyűjtök. |
Simone: “I collect cards.” |
Csaba: Én kártyákat gyűjtök. |
Simone: Let’s use it in a question too. |
Csaba; Te gyűjtesz valamit? |
Simone: “Do you collect anything?” |
Csaba: Te gyűjtesz valamit? |
Simone: All right, let’s move on to the next one. |
Csaba: The next word is remek, or “great, swell.” Remek ez a vacsora. |
Simone: “This dinner is great.” |
Csaba: Remek ez a vacsora. But I remember the conversation being less enthusiastic. Remek... |
Simone: “Great...” |
Csaba: Try to learn the tone and throw this one in next time you’re at a company meeting. Remek... |
Simone: All right, I think we can now move on to the grammar point. |
Csaba: Let’s do that. |
Lesson focus
|
Simone: In this lesson we’re going to discuss postpositions. What do you want to tell us about postpositions? |
Csaba: Postpositions are often used to give the location of certain objects in a sentence. They follow a noun, which serves as a reference point. Let’s take a look at this first sentence |
Simone: “The table will be in front of the TV.” |
Csaba: Az asztal a tévé előtt lesz. Előtt means in front of. a tévé előtt |
Simone: “In front of the TV.” |
Csaba: There is one thing you have to remember. Three things actually. One is that they are used to give the location of things. Two is that they follow a reference point, most often a noun. And finally is that for every direction slash location there are three different forms of the postposition. |
Simone: In the previous sentence we expressed a sort of “existence in front of” something. “The table will be in front of the TV.” Existence. |
Csaba: But if there is movement involved in the sentence and you say something like “let’s put the table in front of the TV,” there is a different form. |
Simone: Let’s see. |
Csaba: Tegyük az asztalt az ablak elé. |
Simone: “We should put the table in front of the windows.” |
Csaba: Tegyük az asztalt az ablak elé. The last part is ablak elé. This means something like “to in front of the window.” |
Simone: So think of it this way |
Csaba: In this order |
Simone: “Next to the kitchen door.” |
Csaba: A konyhaajtó mellett. Konyhaajtó is “kitchen door.” Mellett is next to. This is the static form, no movement involved in the sentence. |
Simone: However we also had... |
Csaba: Az ajtó mellé a pipagyűjteményem jön... |
Simone: “My pipe collection will come next to the door.” |
Csaba: Az ajtó mellé a pipagyűjteményem jön... Mellé means “to next to.” So for this postposition, we also learned two forms |
Simone: “To next to” and “next to.” Or movement towards and static. |
Csaba: I remember saying that there are three forms earlier. The third one will come in a later lesson, don’t worry. for now, we had “under” and “to under.” Az ablak alá a kanapé jön. |
Simone: “The sofa comes under the windows.” |
Csaba: Az ablak alá a kanapé jön. Alá is the “movement to” form. |
Simone: As if we were saying “to under.” |
Csaba: The static form was not mentioned in the dialogue. It is alatt. We know that this takes some getting used to, so please go to the PDF guide and repeat the appropriate forms. |
Simone: And come back next time for more content. Until then |
Csaba: Sziasztok! |
