INTRODUCTION
Simone: All about lesson 11. Top 5 Useful Tools For Learning Hungarian. In this lesson, we have healthier Hungarian studies on offer.
Csaba: Yes we do.
Simone: We are going to tell you the best tools to help you learn Hungarian besides us of course.
Csaba: Yes. These are the supplements for you.
Simone: Think of these tools as like the hammer, nail, wood, glue et cetera that are going to help you build your Hungarian. Build it into a nice, big Hungarian monument of language or something like that.
Csaba: Once you have these tools, just imagine what you can do. We will show you how to get instant translations and word lookup.
Simone: Now the tools. Some are slightly technical, others are just Tried-and-true methods.
Csaba: Yes but use the tools. They will help a lot.
Simone: Yep even if you just try out one or two that suit you, it’s going to bring a lot of benefit. We know because we’ve been there. Okay now number one. What is the number one thing you are going to need Csaba?

Lesson focus

Csaba: A Hungarian dictionary.
Simone: Yeah sorry guys. That was a bit anticlimactic perhaps.
Csaba: Anticlimactic maybe but necessary.
Simone: However what we do have for you are some very exciting dictionaries.
Csaba: Yes there are some surprising new forms out there that won’t make your school bag any heavier.
Simone: So #2 is online dictionaries.
Csaba: Another one. #3 is a grammar dictionary.
Simone: Number 4 is an old favorite, Flash cards.
Csaba: They have helped us many times.
Simone: And last but definitely not least
Csaba: Audio and visual aids.
Simone: So a Hungarian dictionary. This is like what the hammer?
Csaba: Yeah the most essential any way.
Simone: Okay yes. We know that you are thinking obviously but here are what we think are the best ones and maybe some specialized forms of Hungarian dictionaries you’ve never heard of.
Csaba: So of course you can choose the paper form.
Simone: But these are heavy and tedious. Manually looking at words isn’t always that easy and it takes a long time.
Csaba: So there are some more choices. Therefore there are some great tools that have been created to make it easier.
Simone: Electronic dictionaries have developed tremendously and my recommendation is a dictionary from vocal.
Csaba: Some of these dictionaries are talking ones and they allow you to select the phrase you want at the touch of the screen.
Simone: And they have an extensive databank and phrases for most situations. So you don’t ever need to feel panic.
Csaba: But of course, if you prefer the good old hard back there are some good dictionaries out there.
Simone: I think the most popular is the Országh-Magay dictionary, an old but very reliable work course in both directions.
Csaba: But quite heavy and if you use the paper dictionary, you might have a very impatient reader.
Simone: Or worse, give up and just randomly point scary.
Csaba: Well either way, you will get some food.
Simone: Now inevitably like everything in life these days, your learning process will involve the internet.
Csaba: Yes you can’t really avoid it.
Simone: Therefore faced with anything you don’t know on the screen, you should just paste them to…
Csaba: A great dictionary and the one people use the most often between Hungarian and English. It is called www.sztaki.hu and it also works on phones now.
Simone: Plus it also has example phrases for both languages and it’s constantly being updated. Okay so dictionaries are a great tool and we continue with tool 3.
Csaba: It’s a grammar dictionary.
Simone: So once we have some vocabulary down, we of course need to form sentences.
Csaba: And as we know, this is done with grammar.
Simone: Yes and if you don’t have time to take Hungarian grammar lessons every day, a grammar dictionary is a great compliment.
Csaba: Yeah I think everyone should have a grammar dictionary at hand. One direction to go is the University of Debrecen language book series.
Simone: Definitely and there are many others out there in pocket format. So you won’t have to break your back learning Hungarian.
Csaba: So the tools are all great so far.
Simone: Yes but I think we need a dictionary tools break. Let’s get back to something more artsy and crafty.
Csaba: Like one of my personal favorites, flashcards.
Simone: Yeah no better way to burn Hungarian into your mind or to reinforce what you’ve learned visually.
Csaba: And in this case, you can choose the old-fashioned way or the modern way.
Simone: That’s right. You can buy books with ready made flashcards, practice your writing by making your own or there are many online resources for flashcards available too.
Csaba: Yes. There are a lot including iPhone apps and so on.
Simone: It makes it really convenient to use any spare moments you have just to do a few flashcards. Guarantee to push your Hungarian to the next level faster and categorizing your flash cards is always a great start.
Csaba: Okay. Last thing is back to some technical methods. In this case, the computer is a real help.
Simone: Yes because it can make you able to listen and see Hungarian whenever you want.
Csaba: So 25 Audio and visual.
Simone: Audio and visual is one of the best ways of learning a language.
Csaba: And very important to help your brain associate certain parts of the language too.
Simone: Make sure you listen to the language every day even just for a few minutes to let your ears get used to the sound of the language.
Csaba: You can listen to some Hungarian music, read some news or listen to online radio at www.radio.hu which has links to all the different stations of the state radio.
Simone: I am a hardcore listener to Hungarian radio and it has really helped my listening and pronunciation in heaps.
Csaba: Sure. We also need to let our eyes get used to Hungarian. So what better way than reading.
Simone: As reading a novel can be a bit tricky at first, I recommend you go back to when you are a kid learning your own language, what did you use?
Csaba: Picture books.
Simone: Correct. You might think that it’s too childish but it does work. And lucky for you that you are studying Hungarian because Hungarian has some of the best written stories in the world for both children and adults.
Csaba: Yes and books for all levels are available.

Outro

Simone: All these things are great. I have used them all myself but I do have to say that there is one last thing that I want to mention. Maybe people get so into these high flying tech things that they forget about it.
Csaba: What is that?
Simone: That is the humble notebook and pen. So many uses but I will share my tip. Every time you hear a word, learn a word or find yourself lacking a word that you need to know, write it down.
Csaba: Yes otherwise you won’t retain as much.
Simone: And the next time you are with someone Hungarian, you can ask them how do you say such and such or just study the words whenever you pull out the notebook.
Csaba: It’s a really good supplement.
Simone: It’s really going to take your Hungarian to the next level. Well those are the top five tools for learning Hungarian.
